Whenever I'm bored and have nothing to do but think and write, or when I have a particularly entertaining thought that I don't want to forget, I write them down. I've named them braindumps. The following are a selection of those deemed fit for public view.
As for why I'm publishing them for anyone to read, I guess I'm offering them as an entry point to getting to know me. To get to know what I usually ponder about, and what kinds of thoughts and opinions I have on whatever topics. That plus I just have a habit of oversharing. (Maybe I'm narcissistic?)
This page is manually updated from time to time. Some braindumps may not be in English.
tl;dr: These are excerpts from my diary.
How much of facial expressions are instinctive / learned? Dogs are capable of making the “puppydog face” to express needs / request aid from a human, which I’m guessing is instinctive rather than learned. Are the facial expressions used to convey meaning between humans, such as scrunching the face in disgust or widening the eyes in fear/surprise, something that is learned, or does it come prepackaged with the brain? Between different peoples and cultures (with different languages), how different are people’s facial expressions? If someone was raised outside of human society, would they still perceive a scrunched face as discomfort?
1:50pm I don’t like being perfect. Or rather, I loathe the feeling of being ‘imperfect’, that is, not living up to a set of standards that I believe I should follow. Being ‘perfect’ means I’m consistent in following a certain rule, usually doing some action regularly. Then ‘following that rule’ becomes a new standard, and now I feel horrible when I break that consistency. So I just avoid being consistent in the first place, which sounds like a bad idea now that I’ve written it down, because being consistent and having exceptions every now and then is better than purposefully being inconsistent in the first place. 2:08pm Maybe a better way to put this would be, “I don’t like making new rules for myself to follow, because I now have one more thing to ‘mess up’.” Which again is not quite sound, considering that I usually make those rules for a reason, and those reasons are out of my field of control. As in, I usually can’t make the reason behind needing that new rule to go away in the first place. So, regardless of if I make a new rule for myself or not, I still have a problem to tackle. Which means I always have a thing to mess up, and the rule is there to help me not mess it up.
9:06am You know I thought I was incompetent because Yesterday I had to work with some data & tried using R for the first time. I had to pivot a table from wide to long, I fiddled around with some functions & variables but couldn’t figure out what I had to do to achieve my goals. So I ended up asking Gemini what the necessary function would look like. I felt like shit that I wasn’t able to come up with it myself just by looking at the library documentation & the data structure that I was working with (because surely, that’s how they did these things in the olden days before LLMs, right) But I explained the problem I had to my teammates and they literally suggested just feeding the entire csv table into an LLM and asking it to “generate a graph” like bro… are we serious? Like at that point we hadn’t even decided what types of graphs/visualizations we were going to include in the paper. Are we supposed to ask Gemini every single time we need a different visualization even though we’re working with the same exact data? How are we supposed to validate whether whatever it generated actually accurately represents our data or not? I know this is might be a problematic reaction/conclusion but I’m glad that there’s at least a few dozen other people who are clearly much more incompetent than I am. Some of whom are preparing for a masters even. At the same time I’m slightly worried that the technical prowess of the average college student is THIS low 9:29am 9:39am what was I trying to write at 9:29am 10:29am ive mastered the indo european languages english: i’m playing beatmania iidx german: ich bin beatmaniaiidxpleichen french: j’playeux l’iidx béamannie
8:43am Huh? It’s already been four whole days since the last braindump? On the bus to school I was looking through textage.cc and noticed the webmaster was keeping a diary/blog there as well. I never realized that you could write diary entries during the morning. I’ve always been struggling to keep up with recording things on my journal because by the end of the day I’m almost always too tired and executively dysfunctional to actually open up my diary. Woah! Today’s journal entry: 5/1 (Friday) - Worker’s Day. Everyone took their day off. I played some pop’n during the morning, then watched the Mario Galaxy movie with my mom & my siblings. 5/2 (Saturday) - Don’t really recall what happened… I think I spent the whole day at home. 5/3 (Sunday) - Spent the whole day at home as well. Doodled for a bit then (barely) worked on my ling project. On one hand I probably should have not slacked off this much for two consecutive days, on the other hand maybe I deserve to relax a bit after midterms? But on a third hand I never really studied for midterms in the first place so. I should really work on some self control.
12:25pm actually hungry af Today’s log: Woke up around 5:40 Took my meds ~6am. Had a slice of cake for breakfast Left for school at ~7:20am. I was originally going to walk to the shuttle stop but my bag was heavier than I thought it would be and my knees hurt. So I took the bus instead of walking and arrived 30 minutes too early for the shuttle. I had nothing to do so I walked around aimlessly for 30 minutes. In the end I had walked for 30 minutes carrying the heavy asf bag after all. I spent the bus fee for nothing Arrived at school ~8:40am. Was hungry so had a 삼각김밥. Semantics class was boring & the instructor really comes across as not knowing what she’s talking about… (Or at least she definitely does not know how to present it to an audience in a clear and concise way.) The lecture was not worth paying attention to so I spent the three hours reading about: panepon tips and tricks, fire emblem staff interviews (Maeda WAS indeed the lead scenario writer for FE10. Which is wild, he might actually be the goat) (Also Yamakami, the director of panepon, has been the FE series director from Nintendo’s side since a long long time ago) Right now I’m sitting through another three hours of pointless lecture, this time corpus linguistics. This one’s slightly better because the instructor actually DOES know what she’s talking about & is able to lay them out in a clean & understandable way. The problem is that what she’s teaching itself is not that hard to grasp. Like I know how a JSON file is structured… I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to learn from this course. Not that I had a clear expectation in the first place. Oh well. Goodbye tuition. 12:56pm Still hungry. Globasa looks cool? Seems easier to learn than Viossa, at least. 1:01pm I have an instinct, or habit of sorts, to separate and isolate different “sides” of myself. One example is how I use my chrome profiles: Right now I have one for school-related things(my school email), one for development-related things, one for… twitter, really, and one for everything else. I started using multiple profiles during my internship, because I didn’t want chrome to autocomplete things that I didn’t want on my work computer. Before then, I didn’t really have a need for this sort of separation since I hadn’t separated my ‘work self’ from my ‘personal self’ (because I was not working). This separation continued on and expanded to the point that I was attempting to create separate profiles for minuscule things like my individual fields of interest; though none of them stuck around for long enough.
6:39am Good morning world Today’s log: Woke up at 5:45? Got straight outta bed and took my meds before 6. Had breakfast (1 bowl of rice & nattou) fed Hanyang, ran the washing machine, and currently downloading the N64 virtual console on my switch to see if Panepon is on there. My whole body’s kinda sore like I worked out a lot yesterday, which I didn’t. My back and lower belly also hurts, not much though. I don’t like having periods Yesterday I arrived home at around 7:40pm? had dinner and felt really grumpy and tired so I ended up not doing anything productive… oops. I did wash my face and go to bed early. I think I fell asleep a little past 10pm. 8:51am I dont wnat to go to school :(((((( 11:46am Apparently NLI midterms is today I don’t even know what’s going to be on the exam lmao I spent the morning playing Puyo 2, panepon and カエルの為に鐘は鳴る. Puyo 2 easy mode was easy… only for the first stage. The second stage wasn’t easy at all Also I think my period started my tummy hurts 1:07pm Finished the NLI midterms I think I’m actually fucked lnao 4:48pm Actually so sleepy tired holy shit
9:03am Sitting in the lecture hall Full body muscle pain wtf! i haven’t worked out at all for like 5 days in a row : ( Today’s log Yesterday was super busy. Took an exam, then had class until 3pm. The instructor gave us team-based assignments which we were expected to hand in WITHIN THAT DAY, which was crazy & I’m pretty sure she’ll give us more time next week. Anyhow, yesterday I had to spend like two whole extra hours on it. And then at 6pm there was the ss team meetup & I spent a ton of brain juice on that as well. Then I helped out another team’s project by volunteering as their experiment subject. I got anxious and ticced out : ( Arrived home a little past 9pm; at that point I had been starving since 11am but there was nothing to eat at home. I felt a little cranky but managed it well by just ordering some chicken and taking a shower. The chicken arrived at a little past 10pm and I shared it with my sister. We played カエルの為に鐘は鳴る together. Well she played it and I watched. It was fun. Went to bed around 11:30pm. Woke up today at 6:20am. Took my meds, had some leftover chicken as breakfast, then went off to school I wonder if I’ll be able to go play pop’n tomorrow 10:30 Holding back motor tics for too long makes them manifest into tremors Yesterday I was trying hard to suppress my head shaking tics & at some point my head just started to vibrate/tremble 12:10pm Mobile games can’t completely replace handheld console gaming There’s a limit to how fast inputs can be made on a touch interface vs physical buttons. Realized this from playing panepon on Delta Making multiple taps in quick succession on a touch screen requires you to fully take your finger off the interface, whereas on a physical controller the finger can remain in contact with the buttons. When repeatedly pressing the same button this is not much of a problem. However when two different buttons are to be pressed in rapid succession, whether or not you can “slide” your finger across the input to press the second button yields a very real difference. By extension this is also one of the reasons why d-pads are shaped like a cross instead of four separate buttons Oh apparently Nintendo received an Emmy award for inventing the D-pad lmao 1:22pm Stuff I want to do today Read Nagel’s bat essay Review compsci class, read through chapter 5 of textbook. Prepare for Sunday’s talk Write Panepon chain essay Make custom hanzi Play some panepon カエルの為に鐘は鳴る Add ss graphs
Monday 9:16am Actually so sleepy. Spent last night playing Panepon with reug yeop and jinsu Went to bed around midnight I think. Woke up at around 6:30am Forgot to bring concerta & my airpods to school today. I think I’ll visit my psychiatrist The thoughts in my head are all jumbled up, I can’t connect them cohesively enough to put them into words. It feels like there’s a bunch of fragments of ideas floating around inside my mind but no actual full thoughts.
3:44pm Lowkey feeling a littlte anxious(?) Today’s medication: 6:30am Concerta 36mg, Twolion, Lacidofil, Biotop 11:30am Medikinet 20mg Started feeling anxious around 3:30pm, so 4hrs after taking the Medikinet. Trigger might not have been medication (I have a lot of things to do piled up right now) 4:22pm I’m overdue for a visit to my psychiatrist but they won’t be back from vacation for another two days I’m crine What’s it called when someone prefers going by they/them online, not because they are nonbinary, but because they simply don’t want to disclose their gender. What about when that same person prefers to be addressed by their agab irl, not because they’re cis, but because, again, they don’t want other people irl to find out that they’re something other than fully cis. Asking because this do be how I feel sometimes
Holy no journal gap 11:48am At school rn Apparently NLI doesn’t have a final exam. There’s nobody in the lecture hall Oh well The past week’s miseries: I missed school, like a lot Didn’t turn in two of the four final papers Didn’t know there was no finals for NLI Um. and more I think, but I can’t recall Not sure if this is just PMDD or something else entirely. I feel like I’ve lost control over myself. : (
(나에 대해서도, 타인에 대해서도) 3:23pm Just finished taking a shower Starting big projects such as making a game or a blog is overwhelming. Putting them aside for tomorrow has become a habit of mine. Because the amount of work and effort required to pull such a big task off is so large, I subconsciously label them as impossible, and because they’re impossible there’s no point in wrestling with them; I just hand it off to this hypothetical future self and play video games. In reality nothing ever gets started and nothing gets done. What I’m doing right now, writing away on my journal, may as well be another manifest of escapism. My English has gotten rusty over the past few years. I can’t speak or write as smoothly as before. It takes much longer for me to grasp the word I’m looking for. Consequently, when I’m writing in English, I find it difficult to stretch my thoughts further than the initial idea. I don’t know how to put the fragments of ideas that pop up in my head into words, so I struggle with the vague phrases until I give up chasing the concept to the end. I should read and write in English more. Maybe it’s because most of the English I’ve been exposed to over the past few years were tweets or game scripts, both of which are mainly comprised of extremely short sentences and paragraphs. To some extent, it’s very real that language limits one’s thoughts.
Mom’s birthday! Drove to school today. Think I did a pretty good job parking the car 3:35pm Feeling mildly hyperactive and unfocused, slightly sleepy. Took no caffeine today, 36mg mph at 6am, 18mg mph at 12pm. Mom’s touch burger set at 12pm. Honesty does not matter as long as both parties are trying to be honest, because a one to one translation from thought to language is impossible, yet the only way to convey thought to someone else is via language. All information exchange between people is lossy. Sitting in a lecture hall listening to someone teaching something at a slow pace is difficult. Most of the content covered in that day’s class can be understood just by reading through the material over maybe 30 minutes. However, during the lecture, the instructor might pepper in some extra remarks that are not in the course material. This requires one to keep focus on what they are saying. Because listening to someone speak, parsing the string of words they say, disassembling and reconstructing them into abstract, understandable ideas, and placing them in memory all take up energy, it is tiring to do so for three hours straight, especially when over half of what they say is what I already know and therefore of no real value compared to the energy invested to process it. I am aware this is a somewhat arrogant stance, assuming I can teach myself an entire college-level course without listening to what the lecturer has to say in person, but so far the courses themselves aren’t that rich in content in the first place. No class discussions, no assignments, no essays, basically no input asked of me. What am I, as the student, meant to earn from this class that I cannot in any other way? The lectures often appear to offer nothing unique. What is taught in class, I can figure out by myself. But what is on the exams, I cannot. 4:08pm Writing helps me remember the thoughts I had that I would otherwise forget, which is nice, because I am forgetful, but I also like thinking. If I don’t write an especially interesting thought down, I waste time thinking about it over and over again because I worry that I might forget it, until I lose interest in it and end up forgetting it. I’ve probably lost countless fun thoughts this way. Which is sad, but there’s no point in pouting over it, because it’s better (better means I feel more good, not objectively good) to think about other fun thoughts, provided I have the brain power left to do so. Feeling sad about lost thoughts is in itself a fun thought though, which is nice. I post a lot of fun thoughts on twitter. More often than not they’re “performances” posted purely for internet clout. Well, I mostly only post on my protected account so the purpose is closer to being people-pleasing. Either way, they’re not as valuable as braindump, myself-read-only thoughts because what I’m trying to achieve influences what I write; Because my goal is to coax interaction from my internet friends, I purposefully put effort to make both the content and the structure/delivery of the writing to be something that they would find interesting or funny. This does not reflect what goes on in my head normally. If it does, it would mean that what I think about all the time is to please people, which is not entirely false but is something I am not content with. I want my thoughts to be independent of what others think of me. I do know that completely isolating my thoughts from the world outside of my mind is impossible because the world is what I think about. However, thinking like a machine that tries only to calculate the best output for a given input is not only not fun, but would make one reliant on external stimulus to think. Therefore, one might lose the ability to come up with things to think about unless they are given one. I wouldn’t want this to happen to myself because thinking is fun. Reading back on what I just wrote, though, all this seems farfetched. I probably will always have something to think about, which is nice. The point still stands, being that I need to cut down a bit on social media. 4:24pm 4:28pm The more time I spend in academia, the more I am disappointed in it. Well, not that I’m that deep in, but the average student seems uninterested in their major; which is understandable, since a lot of them signed up for a degree just because it would help them get a job, not because they’re actually passionate in the field. Still, it is unfortunate that people actually intrigued in their field of major have very few colleagues to exchange thoughts with. The bachelor’s paper subjects, the student projects at saishiot, all target subfields and topics that seem unpragmatic. What problem do they solve? But people cheer on when someone announce that they’re spending the semester researching another pointless niche field of study. What’s the end goal? Do they have resources just lying around, so much of it that they can afford to spend their entire careers in a field that does not produce any output that helps the society, just because they’re interested in the topic? It’s wild. 5:20pm Oh how I love methylphenidate and how it makes me infinitely thirsty and consequentially infinitely drinking water and producing piss 5:23pm But what I say always reflect what I want to paint myself as, as opposed to how I actually see myself. I act in accordance to achieving some objective. That objective is to gain things, including the trust of people around myself. To gain trust from someone you need to appear as somebody that meets that someone’s values. If possible, it’s logical and natural that one would act in the most likeable way. I say if possible because oftentimes it’s difficult or impossible to mask my unlikeable traits. Everytime I face someone else, I put on a mask to some extent. I say mask because I find myself reacting differently under similar circumstances depending on who I’m interacting with. However, calling these differing reactions all separate masks implies there’s an unmasked form of myself that is different from all these masks. This also feels like an inaccurate description of myself. I can’t come up with a description of an ‘unmasked’ self, mostly because deliberately saying something or doing some action implies I’m with someone. If I were not with anyone else I wouldn’t speak or act in the first place, so a ‘natural’ state, unaffected by the people around me, cannot exist. Maybe, changing myself according to the person I’m interacting with is my nature. Is this an objectively good or bad thing, I believe can’t be evaluated. However, I need to keep up with and remember what mask I put on for each person, and switch to the proper mask each time I interact with them, otherwise their image of me would be impacted negatively. Or so I worry. It would be much less tiring if I were to put on the same mask for everyone, but I can’t for two reasons. The first is that I already have several different masks that I switch between daily, I would’t be able to leave just one mask without cutting ties with everyone that I interact with in a different mask. Secondly, whenever I meet someone new, I subconsciously evaluate what would be the best way to portray myself to them, and act accordingly. This happens instinctively and I don’t feel as if I have control over how I act. Maybe I should consult this with my psychiatrist. I’m going there for meds in two days. 5:41pm
1:42pm It’s already been 9 days since the last braindump, somehow. Time files. In the middle of LD&AI class right now. Class ends at 3pm, and there’s a SS meeting today at 6pm. I’m behind on schedule for my project, so I should work on that during the 3-hour free time I have in between, but I don’t feel like doing it. I’m more interested in looking into the tangut grammar excerpt from Downes’ PhD thesis I printed earlier today. Or I might end up spending the three hours playing Panepon. Who knows? It’s a shame there’s so many things that I want to do when I only have a handful of free hours each day. I always feel like I’m out of time, as if I’m being chased by some deadline; besides, most of the time, I actually am being chased by a deadline, if not multiple. But then whenever I don’t have an immediately urgent task right in front of me, I lose all momentum and can’t figure out what I’m supposed to do. All the while I’m beating myself up for not spending my time “efficiently”, all the time. After all, I have so little time yet so many things that I have to do and want to do. Often this obsession of spending time efficiently backfires and prevents me from actually doing productive things, because I end up getting depressed and unmotivated. The last time I talked about this to my psychiatrist, he seemed to have understood the root of the problem as my inability to complete tasks in time. Although that is indeed a problem I still have, I think that the ‘time efficiency obsession’, so to say, is a separate issue. I should reorganize my thoughts and mention this the next time I go to the psychiatrist. I opened the braindump document to write something. It wasn’t what I wrote above. I forgot what it was. Oh well. I believe the Tangut language would be easier to describe in Korean than, for example, English. Tangut and Korean both borrow many words/morphemes from the Han script. They have similar grammar structure, and so far several words appear to have semantic fields that overlap more greatly with existing words in Korean than English. 2:01pm Ah! I remembered what I opened the braindump document for. I think lexapro isn’t working as well as it did earlier. It seems to have diminished effects, compared to about a week ago. I feel more anxious in the morning. To be more concise, I have short (15~30min) bouts of feeling generally terrified, heart beating faster, lightheaded. My focus is worse during mid-day, around 1~2pm; this is usually after lunch, at which point about 8~9 hours have passed since my waking up in the morning, and I have more difficulties staying focused.
Fortune’s weave on Leda chapter 11 Father Mahdel’s end, how he chose his one final act to protect Leda with his life, symbolizes the entire point of Leda’s arc. What wrongs that has happened can’t be undone, but one has the power to make things right, and the obligation to make the right choice. Also when Guillermo is defeated the death animation is played, which I’m pretty sure is the first time the player sees an actual death (instead of a retreat) on Leda P1 Love the parallelism of Father Mahdel and Leda both choosing to spare a life instead of taking one, finally facing themselves in all honesty. Leda had so much self-hatred and guilt because she thought that she was partly responsible for the Cydonian massacre. The only way she could cope with this twisted self-image was to redirect her hate from herself to another target. However, because the root of her pain laid in herself, and how she (inaccurately) viewed and understood the tragedy she went through her path of violence wasn’t helping her come to a closure.
12:36pm How come melanism seems to never happen in humans? Does it only happen in a select few species (vertebrates maybe) in the first place, or is melanism common amongst other animal species making humans one of the outliers? Within species which melanism is confirmed to occur, are the occurrence rates similar to that of other melanin abnormalities (e.g. albinism) or do they have different rates? What are the factors that affect whether an individual has melanism or not?
10:34am I'm so hungry I might pass out (exaggeration) Went to bed ~8pm yesterday. Was super sleepy for no reason... actually for a reason, the reason being I forgot to take my mid-day concerta 3 days in a row. Woke up 3am, Cuddled with Hanyang, fell back asleep, and when I woke up again it was about 5:30am. Took morning meds around 6am. Breakfast was mom's 된장국 with some rice and kimchi around 6:15am. So it's been about 4 hours since my last meal. Makes sense that I'm hungry. Unfortunately class won't end for another hour or so. Spent the morning coaxing Gemini to produce a python script that converts vertical Japanese PDF files to HTML with horizontal text. Finally I can add furigana to my illegally obtained Japanese book scans via the chrome extension. 4:21pm Dying from hunger all over again Had mom's touch for lunch & 18mg concerta at 12:30pm. Complex implicational universals are useful ? The familiar feeling of "I don't want to do jack shit" is back. I don't feel like doing anything. No particular reason. I just feel like being stubborn. So I'm sitting in the lecture hall not paying attention, not doing anything else, not committing to a particular chain of thought, just sitting here contemplating about random things like how hungry I am, occasionally taking halfhearted class notes. I just want to go home. Get some workout. Take a warm shower, gossip for a bit on Discord and go to bed. But I'm stuck in this classroom for at least another hour and a half. Braindumps are legitimately helping my Twitter addiction to some extent. Was I using Twitter as a place to dump my random thoughts on? Well, partly. Mostly the reason I log onto Twitter is to look at my notifications and ravel in the glory. It feeds into my attention-seeking tendencies. So addictive. It's like crack cocaine to me, although I have never tried crack cocaine so this might not be very good an allegory. I'm craving some 귤. I'm hungry. 5:02pm Just went downstairs to the convenience store and devoured a 삼각김밥 yum. I still feel a bit hungry though. Sucks that I have to drive home on a semi empty sto
8:23am Boggles the mind that agentic coding is dependent not only on token prices but also on internet access since most people use non-local agents. Insane Woke up around 5am? Had breakfast ~6am with 36mg MPH. About 2 hours since medication, feel buzzy, like I should do something but I'm not sure exactly what. The school bus was a few minutes late this morning. Perhaps I should play BMS 2:14pm Might have to study for midterms actually? Apparently it's next week? What? Also have to catch up on BaLLM schedule. Also have to finish FEFW. Also scraping pop'n data is pretty fun. Data hoarding seems to be a (sort of) healthy/productive way of realizing my hoarding tendencices.
